Well, it really depends, on what type of army you want. Warhammer 40k offers many different options. The Tau are a relatively new race, and offer lots of firepower, and speed. They are horrible in Close Combat, but can be very effective if used correctly. The Tau also have the Kroot, which are opposite to the Tau, as they have bad shooting, but good Close Combat skills. If you want weird and creepy go Tyranid (can get very confusing, they are large close combat oriented monsters) If you want EVIL, go Chaos Space Marine (high armor save, good in close combat, and good at shooting, but fight in relatively small numbers), or you can pick Dark Eldar (like dark elves of fantasy, they are evil, good at shooting, but low armor) If you want Human go with Imperial Gaurd (low armor, great tanks, and fight in large numbers), or Space Marines (which are like chaos space marines, but no as evil). If you like good, go with Eldar (like high elves of fantasy, fast, good shooting, low armor) If you like machines, then go with Necrons (they are machines, and have good armor, and lots of special rules) For more info, i advise going to the Games Workshop website (go to the UK one, its best) at uk.games-workshop.com/40kuniverse/warhammer40k/warhammer40k.htmif you need any more help, just e-mail me, and for more info on tau, go to the units page, it will tell you all about the tau units

I have to say, Kencaid said it better than I could and in way less reading then I would have siad it.
Hes right.
And good brake downs of each race.
Look online or check out White dwarfs etc.
Read battle reports to see how each army plays.
Tau are really shooty but have real trouble in close combat.
Every army is supposed to have a strenght and weakness. (I dont know what marines is yet?)
But Necrons high points cost but there will be back helps way that out.
Stuff like that.
Good luck and welcome to the world of 40K.
hope you love it as much as I have.
ASlo if you can go to a gW or hobby shop that supports it and get into some games of each race. If they have them theyll let you try them.
At my hobby shop we play with new people and let them sit in with us and help us play a game against someone else new.
Good luck and enjoy.
